Life & career

Shin Chae-ho (申采浩), pen name Danjae (丹齋), was an independence activist, historian and journalist of the late Korean Empire and colonial period. As chief editor of the Hwangseong Sinmun and the Korea Daily News he led the patriotic enlightenment movement, and through works such as Doksa Sillon and the Ancient History of Joseon (朝鮮上古史) he laid the foundations of nationalist historiography. He wrote the Declaration of the Korean Revolution for the Uiyeoldan, and, pursuing an anarchist independence struggle, died a martyr in Lüshun (旅順) Prison. He was posthumously awarded the Order of Merit for National Foundation (Daehanminguk-jang class, 1962).
