Life & career

Sin Sung-gyeom (申崇謙, ?–927) is the founding ancestor of the Pyeongsan Sin clan; his original name was Neungsan (能山) and he was a native of Gokseong in Jeolla Province. Having been a general of Taebong, together with Hong Yu, Bae Hyeon-gyeong, and Bok Ji-gyeom he drove out Gungye and elevated Wang Geon as king, becoming a founding merit subject of Goryeo.

From King Taejo Wang Geon he received Pyeongsan (平山) as his fief and was granted the surname Sin (申). In 927, at the Battle of Gongsan (公山), he fell in battle fighting in place of King Taejo, who had been surrounded by Gyeon Hwon, and for his loyalty he was posthumously enfeoffed as Duke Jangjeol (壯節公).

Grave

The Tomb Precinct of Duke Sin Jangjeol (申壯節公墓域) is in Bangdong-ri, Seo-myeon, Chuncheon, Gangwon Province, with memorial rites held on the 3rd day of the 3rd lunar month and the 9th day of the 9th lunar month.

Descendants

His descendants took Pyeongsan as their ancestral seat and carried on as a renowned family of military officials.
