Life & career
Sin Sung-gyeom (d. 927), founding ancestor of the Pyeongsan Sin clan, served as a general under Taebong's King Gung-ye before joining Hong Yu, Bae Hyeon-gyeong, and Bok Ji-gyeom in overthrowing him and enthroning Wang Geon as founder of Goryeo. He received Pyeongsan as his fief and the surname Sin from Taejo Wang Geon.
At the 927 Battle of Gongsan, when Taejo was surrounded by the forces of Later Baekje's Gyeon Hwon, Sin exchanged armor and mount with the king to allow his escape and was killed in his place; unable to recover his head, Taejo had a golden replica made for burial. His tomb near Chuncheon, Gangwon Province, is said to have three burial mounds to thwart grave robbers, and his son Sin Bo later became a chancellor of Goryeo.
Grave
The Tomb Precinct of Duke Sin Jangjeol (申壯節公墓域) is in Bangdong-ri, Seo-myeon, Chuncheon, Gangwon Province, with memorial rites held on the 3rd day of the 3rd lunar month and the 9th day of the 9th lunar month.
Descendants
His descendants took Pyeongsan as their ancestral seat and carried on as a renowned family of military officials.
