The Pyeongsan Shin Clan and Its Founder, Shin Sung-gyeom

The Pyeongsan Shin clan (平山 申氏) has its ancestral seat in Pyeongsan, Hwanghae Province. Its founder Shin Sung-gyeom (申崇謙), a native of Gokseong in Jeolla Province, was a founding merit subject of Goryeo who, together with Hong Yu, Bae Hyeon-gyeong, and Bok Ji-gyeom, ousted Gung Ye and enthroned Wang Geon. He received Pyeongsan as a fief from Taejo and was granted the surname Shin (申); in 927 he died in the Battle of Gongsan in place of Taejo, and was posthumously honored as Jangjeolgong (壯節公).

A Representative Military House

Since Shin Sung-gyeom it is famous as a military house that produced many warriors, including the celebrated Imjin War general Shin Rip, as well as Shin Gak, Shin Gyeong-jin, Shin Heon, and Shin Dol-seok; it was also renowned as a house of skilled archers. Meanwhile, the literary master Shin Heum and the artists Shin Saimdang and Shin Wi also came from this house. During the Joseon period it produced 8 State Councillors, 2 Daejehak, and 186 civil-examination graduates.
