Yi Bang-rin (李芳隣, pen name Dongho) was a military official, a Yeongnam descendant of the Cheongan Yi, who raised a militia at Gyeongju in the Imjin War. The Encyclopedia of Korean Culture's Samgoejeong entry says the pavilion was built to honour him and his brothers Yi Yu-rin (Hunryeonwon chumjeong) and Yi Gwang-rin (Hunryeonwon bongsa); he joined Gyeongju magistrate Bak Ui-jang and militia leader Gwon Eung-su in recovering Gyeongju fortress, and the Gwangamrok records use of the Bigyeok Jincheolloe shell made by the cannon-maker Yi Jang-son.
Namu Wiki and local news say he passed the military examination (Byeong-gwa) in 1583 and distinguished himself at Yeongcheon and Gyeyeon, later serving as deputy magistrate of Andong. A tale says he kept a three-year vigil by his father's grave, giving the place the name Hyoja-dong. His birth year is given as 1547 or 1574.
Samgoejeong stands at Dasan-ri, Gangdong-myeon, Gyeongju, and is said to have been built in 1815 by his seventh-generation descendant Yi Hwa-taek (other accounts say sixth generation or 1813). It is named for the pagoda tree each brother planted before going out as a militia; it became North Gyeongsang Tangible Cultural Heritage No. 268 in 1992 and is owned by the Cheongan Yi lineage. That Yi Bang-rin is a Cheongan Yi rests on Namu Wiki, the Chungcheong Ilbo series (written Yi Bang-in) and the ownership of Samgoejeong; the encyclopedia entry itself does not state the seat.
He took part with Bak Ui-jang and Gwon Eung-su in recovering Gyeongju fortress and used the Bigyeok Jincheolloe.
A pavilion with a three-bay hall and heated rooms on both sides; the central room Pilgyeongjae stands for him and Hwasudang and Pogukheon for his two brothers.
Yi Eung-chun and Yi Nul are also presented as Imjin War militiamen.
