Late-Goryeo scholar and literary figure who kept his fidelity; pen name Dunchon (遁村)

Yi Jip's pen name was Dunchon (遁村). He passed the higher civil service examination under King Chungmok, but was renowned for his upright fidelity, as when he fled to Yeongcheon in the 17th year of King Gongmin (1368) to escape the persecution of the powerful minister Sin Don. After Sin Don's death he was appointed panjeon gyosisa but soon resigned.
He then lived in seclusion in Cheonnyeong-hyeon, Yeoju, devoting himself to composing poetry and prose, and associated through poetry with more than sixty renowned scholars of the day, such as Yi Saek and Jeong Mong-ju. His poetry is esteemed for its plain, natural, direct style.
The Dunchon-dong neighborhood in Gangdong-gu, Seoul, is a place name derived from his pen name, and his grave was designated Gyeonggi Monument No. 219 in 2008.
