Founder of the Geochang Jang clan, said to have served as Grand Academician of the Yemun-gwan under King Chungnyeol of Goryeo; posthumous name Chungheon
| Era | 고려 후기 |
| Clan | 거창 장씨 |
Jang Jong-haeng (章宗行) is honored as the founder of the Geochang Jang clan (居昌 章氏) and was a late Goryeo figure. The Digital Geochang Culture Encyclopedia says he served as Grand Academician of the Yemun-gak under King Chungnyeol, with the posthumous name Chungheon (忠獻); Namuwiki adds posts such as Minister of Dopan and Grand Academician of the Yemun-gwan. One tourism text gives his pen name as Pyeongbo, but this could not be confirmed elsewhere.
Accounts of his origin differ. According to the 1903 preface to the old genealogy written by Choe Ik-hyeon, the Jang family was originally a distinguished house of Jianzhou in China and crossed the sea to Goryeo when the Song fell to the Yuan. Texts introducing Geonyejeong say he naturalized from China under King Chungnyeol. There is also a story that he was a son-in-law of An Hyang, but this is family tradition and should be checked against genealogies and Goryeo records. His dates of birth and death could not be confirmed.
His son Jang Du-min was enfeoffed as Lord of Arim for defeating the Red Turbans under King Gongmin and received Geochang as his fief, and his descendants settled there and took Geochang as their seat. In Sangnim-ri, Geochang-eup, Geonyejeong and Boweonjae honor Jang Jong-haeng and serve as the clan's center. See the Geochang Jang clan page for more.
Choe Ik-hyeon's genealogy preface says the family came from Jianzhou in China, and texts on Geonyejeong say he naturalized under King Chungnyeol. A story that he was An Hyang's son-in-law also exists, but sources differ and it cannot be asserted. Sources: the Digital Geochang Culture Encyclopedia and Namuwiki.
