Jang Man-ri (章萬里) was a military man of Seonjo's reign. According to Namuwiki he volunteered for the 1583 Jurchen rebellion of Nitanggae and won merit several times. The Digital Geochang Culture Encyclopedia says that during the Imjin War, as King Seonjo fled toward Uiju, he carried the king on his back away from the Japanese; for this he was named a Hoseong merit subject, posthumously made Seungji and given a memorial gate (jeongnyeo). Namuwiki calls him a Hoseong Wonjong merit subject and says he received a document marked young-se-bul-mang-ja.
Namuwiki describes the king being carried more than ten ri in the rain as the Japanese closed in, but this is clan and local tradition and could not be confirmed in contemporary records such as the Veritable Records of Seonjo. The Hoseong merit was given to those who accompanied Seonjo to Uiju, but the Digital Geochang Culture Encyclopedia writes Hoseong and Namuwiki Hoseong Wonjong, so the exact class differs by source. His dates are unknown.
The Geochang Jang clan produced several people who made their name in the Imjin War, among them Jang Man-ri. Together with the stories of Jang Heon-hwi and Jang Heon-bu, it is introduced as a signature tradition of the Geochang Jang clan.
The story of carrying the king is clan tradition and was not checked against contemporary records. The class of merit also differs by source.
His tomb and the location of his memorial gate could not be confirmed.
