A physician trained at Severance, Kim Pil-sun supported the independence movement by building an ideal Korean settlement in Manchuria.
Born in 1878, he secretly joined the Sinminhoe and took part in independence activities before fleeing to China in late 1911 as arrest loomed in the wake of the 105-Man Incident. In Tonghua, Manchuria, he opened a hospital and donated all its income to fund the independence army; when Tonghua fell increasingly under Japanese influence, he relocated in 1916 to Qiqihar, where he opened another hospital, purchased land, and worked to build an ideal village for Korean settlers. In 1919 he reportedly died after drinking poisoned milk given by a neighboring Japanese doctor suspected of being a Japanese agent, falling from his horse on the way home.
