The Namwon Yang Clan and Its Founder, Yang U-ryang

The Namwon Yang clan (南原 梁氏) is a surname that branched from the Jeju Yang clan and has its ancestral seat in Namwon, Jeonbuk State. The founder of the Jeju Yang clan, Yang Eul-la (良乙那), is said to have founded the Tamna Kingdom (耽羅國) on Jeju Island. His descendant Yang U-ryang (梁友諒) was enfeoffed as Namwon Bubaek (南原府伯) in the reign of King Gyeongdeok of Silla and branched to Namwon; the central clan association of the Yang surname honors Yang U-ryang as the ancestor of the changed and granted surname (改賜姓祖).

The Divisions of the Major Branches

Yang Neung-yang (梁能讓), who rose to Byeongbu Nangjung and Donggungnae Sigang Haksa in the reign of King Seongjong of Goryeo, became the Byeongbugong-pa (兵部公派); Yang Ju-un (梁朱雲), enfeoffed as Chanhwa merit subject and Yongseong Buwongun in the reign of King Wonjong of Goryeo, became the Yongseonggun-pa (龍城君派); and Yang Su-jeong (梁水精), enfeoffed as Daebang Buwongun in the reign of King Chungseon of Goryeo, became the Daebanggun-pa (帶方君派), each branching separately. The Namwon Yang clan honors these three as founding ancestors (起世祖) and holds ancestral rites for them each year. The wife of Yang Neung-yang, founding ancestor of the Byeongbugong-pa, was a great-granddaughter of Taejo Wang Geon of Goryeo, making him Wang Geon's son-in-law.
